Industrial design

10th January 2009

It is not often that the Design community receives news from Greece. However, when it does, there is always something interesting worth mentioning.

“Bartesera” (Athens, Greece) is currently hosting the second annual Industrial Design exhibition. This year’s exhibition started on the 8th of December and will be ending on the 17th of January 2009. In this exhibition, 20 Greek Designers are presenting to the public their lighting, furniture and product design concepts and prototypes.

The exhibition is being organized by the Hellenic Secretariat of Industrial Design. The participants are: A. Galanaki, Th. Kalkanis, H. Karakalpaki, Κ. Κatinis, V. Marengo, Κ. Missari, Th. Babalis, Τ. Birbili, Α. Economidi, Ν. Papageorgiou, Κ. Papathanassopoulou, D. Papakiriakou, H. Papaleonida, Ch. Skouloudi, Κ. Spyridonos, D. Sotiriou, D. Farao, D. Fortsa, G. Haidopoulos and D. Halkou.

From the exhibition, one of the most impressive projects was the creation of Christina Skouloudi. A pending lighting element made of 1 mm laser cut steel sheeting. The element combines geometric and organic form incorporating various possible means of illumination such as LEDs. It is characterized by simplicity in manufacturing, versatility, and the feeling of serenity which is produced regardless of the light being on or off.

I recently travelled to Milos again to help install some furniture I had designed some months ago. Here's how it went...

And travelling around the island, I also made a friend with whom we have a lot in common

Here are some recent projects that have kept me busy...

The following piece of furniture was sent @ De Padova's furniture competition...

Some time ago I was asked to design a flairing station for a bartender school. For this project there was close collabotation with the president of the Hellenic bartender Association. Flairing is the art of tossing and flipping bottles as a means to impress the customers. Competitions are taking place all over the world...

The bartender needs to have the bottles easily accessible in front of him/her and often needs to prepare fruit etc at his working station. The station had to be mobile and be able to incorporate a garbage bin and removeable stainless steel cases with various ingredients.

Another simpler version was later developed >>

One of my favorite projects was the "clip and tag" concept developed for submission at the Muji design competition. The clip and tag concept is aimed at easy hardcopy and notes management that neither belong in a drawer nor on a desk...>>

In the front there is a paper sticker one can use a pencil to jot down the content of the documents clipped together and at the back, there is the option of featuring a flat magnet that is fastened to the clip and used for attaching the clip on a surface such as the door of a fridge.

The year at Artis - Omiros College where I have been teaching furniture design is finished and we have made a lot of effort during the past month to set up the exhibition before everybody goes off on vacation. My duties where focused in building the stands for the models and freshening up the panels by repainting them. The stands where quite interesting to build as they are made entirely out of blue foam and double sided tape. They were made and painted within a day and a half. They are now easy to carry around (very lightweight), safe to store ( very tollerant to moisture) and simple to maintain, repair and repaint if necessary.

Here are some pictures from the show before the opening...

Here is a photo of the 2007 Mostra Rota exhibition - Salesway Booth for whom I built the stands. We made use of the perforated metal sheets and designed the stands around them. The results were exhellent.
